my 97 camry is surging under acceleration? while going through lights in a straight line, while still have half tank of fuel, suspect fuel pump but would like a second opinion!

 

V6 or 4 cylinder?

Surging at idle, etc also.

 

It's a 4cyl. It just stalls at idle, and will surge at a higher RPM. No CEL at anytime, and the light is functional. I also pulled the EGR valve off.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

A plugged converter can cause this.

 

Its only after warming up. There's no consistent pattern though. Yesterday morning I figured that I would replace the plugs. They old ones were the wrong type with the single tab. After changing the plugs, I drove the car and ran it at idle for 35 minutes without an issue. After a drive, I was pulling back into the neighborhood and it stalled and began surging again. I have a former Toyota dealer mechanic in the area, and had him drive the car. He was leaning towards a bad coil pack or a bad injector. He had 2 good coil packs that he gave me to swap out. After that, it stalled once right away, and started to buck as soon as I went for a drive. I came back home and ran the car at idle, both in and out of gear, and ran perfectly. I even ran the engine a various RPM's from 3500 to 1000 for a half hour, and it never missed a beat. Going to drive it again this morning, stay tuned...
