99 camry le v6 help! engine chugging and poor mpg

Hello. I have a 99 camay (with a 4 speed automatic transmission) my check engine light came and the car started to "chug" like it was drowing in fuel. I went to a mechanic and he said my EGR valve was bad so.....I replaced it.. Ran fine for about...4 miles, then it started chugging really hard again so I haven't been back to him. In the mean time I I have bypassed the system(unplugging it) for the time being. My gas mileage is HORRIBLE! it's around 15 city and 18 highway, all stock minus a cold air in take the previous owner installed...poorly.(looking to Reinstall the stock airbox)
.I s it possible that it has something to do with my mass airflow sensor?

Thank you any help is appreciated!

Do you have the code number(s)?

Who is doing the work, you or mechanic?

If a mechanic and car only went 4 miles before same symptoms, take it back and ask to have it fixed correctly.

What was unplugged, vacuum hose, electrical plug to VSV?

A poorly installed cold air intake might cause issues with air flow through the MAF. Does the MAF use an oil coated air filter?

You can try cleaning the MAF. The internet has posts on this, perhaps a video. The engine type is a 1MZFE. Use a spray cleaner stated to be safe for electronics, auto parts stores will sell the product.
