Gen 4 5s-fe Cali vs Fed emissions differences
 

Hi everyone,

So the 2.2L engine in my 98 Camry dropped a valve or developed rod knock, either way its trashed. I found a donor car, a 99 Camry for $500 that was hit in the front. The engine in my 98 was federal emissions spec and the new donor is California spec.

From what I've gathered so far, the exhaust manifold and upstream O2 sensor are different. Not a problem there I can just reuse my old Fed one. However, with the IACV and injectors, it appears the Cali spec on uses air-assisted injectors.

There's a vacuum port in between injectors #2 and 3 with a hose going a port on the IACV (not present on the Fed engine). The injectors themselves are shaped differently and I think the head castings are different. The Cali injectors are 250cc and the Fed injectors are 235cc non-air assisted. Does anyone have experience with this?

My plan would be to swap exhaust manifolds, swap throttle body/IACV, plug the vacuum port on the head, and run my Fed injectors. I did test fit them and they fit in the Cali head snug, I just won't know if it leaks or runs correctly until I fire it up. If not could I run the Cali injectors with the air assist port plugged?

All what you state is correct.

Best route is to use Fed injectors plus Fed spacers, insulators, etc, then plug port.
