Oil for 1998 w/158K

I just bought my first Camry...a 1998 LE (2.2L - L4) w/158K miles. I'm the 4th owner. The most recent owner used conventional oil @ 3K mile changes. I have no idea what was done prior to 120K, when he bought it. Should I continue with conventional, or move to high mileage, blend or full synthetic, and at what frequency?

The previous owner said the car didn't burn or leak oil, but when I checked the dipstick, it was a quart low.

Thanks.

It would not be unusual for the 4 cylinder to leak some oil, typically the valve cover. Or burn some oil at this mileage.

Oil types and oil change frequency is much debated.

Full synthetic is the best for minimal engine wear.

Conventional oil and a 3-5K oil change period also works but again full synthetic is best.

If using full synthetic suggest changing it every 5k. Some owners go longer, the issue is hard data is difficult to find and synthetic does not last forever despite many claims.

Also check the trans fluid condition. This is often neglected (never changed) resulting in trans damage.

Need advice on oil change

Sorry for waking up an old thread,

i recently bought a 1998 Toyota Camry LE - I4. It has done ~130k and i did an oil change at approx ~127xxx miles when i bought it.

My question is, should i stick with mineral oil or should i go for a full synthetic one?

Degenmj's post was confusing. At the end, it wasn't clear enough which one should be picked.

If i decide to go for synthetic oil change, what are the precautions that i should take? Also which synthetic oil should i get?

Also when i got the engine, it was super silent, after i did the oil change, i noticed the noise of engine has increased. What could be the reason? I did it a Econo-lube shop in Sacramento, CA. Since a new oil change is coming up soon, i plan to get it done again. I will be getting the oil change from Midas here, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you
