"Dead Key" Problem on 1995 Camry 2.2 Auto: Suggestions?
The reason that I use the term "dead key" is this:
When you turn the switch to what would be the "run" position, all of the warning lights that are supposed to be on for a check(airbag, etc.) come on, as well as the seat belt warning chime.
When you turn the key to "start", though as if you are trying to start the engine, there is no current draw at all, and the starter does not even attempt to turn over.
I took the starter off of the car for testing, and went ahead and had it rebuilt, since it was the factory starter, and the car has more than a few miles on it. I knew that this would also eliminate the soleinoid as a factor. I would have had to have replaced it sometime in the future, anyway. The starter is not the problem.
Is this a common thing with Camry's? I'm wondering where I should look next for the problem. I'm thinking perhaps starter relay or NSS(Neutral Saftey Switch)? I am unable to find the starter relay, and the book tells me to look at the car to find it. That is a ton of help.
I'm thinking the igniton switch as a last resort.
Any ideas on what the problem could be anyone? All help will be welcomed.

RE: "Dead Key" Problem on 1995 Camry 2.2 Auto: Suggestions?
Starter relay is located in "Junction Box 2". That is the box on the front of PS fender. As you look at the box from the PS side the starter relay is the further most forward relay and the one closest toyou. Pins 1 & 3 is the ignition switch connection while pins 2 & 4 is the starter connection. If you apply power through 1 &3 you should get continuity at pins 2 & 4. There are alsothree big fuses in this junction box, 1 40A and 2 30A which you should check. Check these and get back on what you find.

i have the same problem, intermitent. sometimes a couple of key attempts work, but lately it wont, so i installed a ''hotswitch'' under hood.
is there a relay on auto trannys also ?? the diagram in my manual says there isnt one ? but there should be, i dont see why there would be one...
ill check it out tommorrow.
wheres that box anyways ? is it in passenger or driver kick panel ?
