'07 XLE V6- what'd I break?
 

OK, new guy here hoping for a hand...

This weekend, I swapped out the spark plugs on my 2007 Camry V6 XLE 3.5l/2GRFE. Obviously, the ones on the rear cylinder bank were the hardest.

Anyway, while stretching in to reach the rear center plug, my knuckles hit the wires attached to the sensor right next to that plug, screwed directly into the valve cover. The wires ripped right out of the sensor, leaving the sensor still attached to the valve cover and the wires disconnected. Not knowing what else to do, I soldiered on and put everything back together.

Also, there appears to be a similar sensor on the front cylinder bank, next to the center spark plug. I found it on AllData... it's the VVT sensor, or at least the connector to it. That doesn't tell me much, though...

So, anyway, now I'm getting a Check Engine light and a "Check VSC" warning on the dash.

I don't have the ability to check what code is being thrown, nor do I have the money to have a dealer tell me.

I guess the question is:
- Any suggestions how to replace/reconnect it without buying a whole harness or part thereof?

The engine has 4 VVT sensors, 2 on each cylinder head.

How many wires on the sensor and what color? The VVT sensors have 3 wires.

Wire colors for the sensor on the cylinder head closest to the firewall are yellow, black and red. And green/red, blue and light green.

Some autoparts stores will loan out code readers. but not in all states. Call around. There is a ODBII plug under the dash near the steering wheel.

The Check VSC light is on because the Check Light is on. Fix the sensor, the check should go off along with the VSC light.

Is the harness plug still installed in the VVT sensor? Can you remove the plug. If the individual pins may come out? You can resolder the wires to the pins.

Yes, the harness plug is still installed in the sensor, so I hope I can solder it back together... that's this weekend's project.

If you can figure out where the wires go on the plug the following may help:

The wiring diagram has all 4 VVT sensor oriented the same showing the wiring color and location on the plug. If you do the same to the 2 sensors on the head near the fire you will find:

One sensor has wires in this order, Yellow (EX+ on part connects to EV1+ on engine computer), Black (EX-/EV1-), Red (VC2/VCE1). Black is the center wire.

The other on the same head has the wires in the order Blue (EX+/VV1+), Light Green (EX-/VV1-), Yellow (VC2/VCV1). Light Green is the center wire.

The EV1+/- and VV1+/- connections are to signal coil inside the sensor.

Advance Auto Parts had the connector in stock with pigtails already on it, correctly colored. So, $59.99 later, I am good to go.
