1990 Camry 2.0 issue, won't rev, accelerate.

Hey there!

have a 1990 Camry with an issue.

Car drove perfectly fine.. until it didn't.

Symptoms: starts hard, once started it idles fine. If I try to rev the engine it sounds like it is starving for fuel.. has that nice empty bogging sound.

When i move the throttle very slowly, it will rev all the way.. it is just the quick revs that shut it down.. it will stall as well.

So.. I replace the fuel filter, the one that came out was quite dirty, no joy.

I have a coil on order, as I have had to replace it once already.

have all other tune up parts ready to go on.

now.. I do not have the SST to check the fuel pressure on the banjo fitting for the CSI. although if I crack it while it cranks it does squirt heavily and with quite a bit of force. i was thinking maybe the fuel pressure regulator, so I disconnected the hose and applied vacuum.. it takes and holds vacuum fine.

I believe i will test the TPS as well which is something I have not done yet.

Does anyone have any suggestion of where this gremlin is hiding?

The car has 218k on the clock and has been relatively trouble free..

as for the fuel pump.. have replaced twice, last one was 2 months back with a Bosch because the airtek I put in before that gagged.

I am pretty sure this is not a fuel pressure issue, even though it seems to act like one.

there ya have it.. I'd rather not just throw parts at it and it has not set a code.

From the sounds of things, you are getting fuel to the engine. So what about spark? When was the last time the plugs were changed? I'm not quite sure bad plugs would cause such a problem and there isn't CEL. I would also look at the throttle body, maybe dirt and grime around the throttle plate? Air filter? Check as much stuff as you can without having to spend any cash. Keep us posted.

Did you put the new coil in. I was having a similar problem and it turned out to be the coil.
