1991 Camry 2.0/auto vibaration at idle
 

I have a 1991 Camry 2.2/auto/Front WD/145,000 miles/2nd owner. There is a very noticable vibration throughout the car at idle. It's very apparent between 850-1000rpm. The car drives/runs great. It starts right up, idles perfect and runs out very good.Engine has never been apart. My first approach to the problem was to replace 4 of the motor mounts. Right front, rear, front and center mounts. The center/trans mount was the only one that was actually broken. Replacing those mounts did not phase the problem. Any suggestions please!!! Thank you.

That's a little high for idle, unless it's cold. Is vibration there only when the engine is cold but idle OK when engine warm and idle is down to about 750?

The car idles perfectly around 950rpm at cold idle and about 700 at warm idle. Vibration is there all of the time but very apparent between 850-1050rpm. Thanks. Would the egr valve have anything to do with this?

Usuallyan EGR leak would cause stalling orunstable idle as it is just a vacuum leak.I would see ifa paticular cylinder is causing the rough idle. Try having someone hold idle at the problem range, then disconnect and replace each spark plug wire and see if there is any change in idlefor a particular wire being disconnected. You will notice no change inidle for the problem cylinder. Other than that it may be the balance shaft - not worth fixing.

Pedro, Disconnecting the plugs one at a time was not the problem. Compression at full warm up is 120psi straight across, removing only one plug at a time. How about the harmonic balancer??? I just took a 300 mile trip and it does seem to have a miss going up hill. Hard to tell. I have not replaced the wire/cap set.It has new NGK plugs. How about a worn bearing on the timing belt side?

120psi sounds very low. Not sure what the factory compression should be on a 91, but on my 95 it is 172. If you're looking for a worn bearing as a cause then for the year and mileage I'd just live with it. Same thing if this is a worn balance shaft, live with it. However, replacing an old wire set, along with cap/rotor is worth a try.
