RE: 1996 camry v6 overheating

Does the trans downshift to keep the RPM's up when going up hills, are these long hills, what MPH are you going? Does the engine run OK and not miss when going up hills?

Overheating is typically caused by cooling system issues. If the car is moving at higher speeds that allow enough airflow through the radiator the issue may be plugged radiator, debris on the outside of the radiator, thermostat.

Next time the car over heats turn the heater on full blast. If the temp starts dropping the issue is lack of cooling.

You have to monitor your cooling agent level. If it gets lower and lower then the problem may be coused by a damaged (cracked)engine head or its sealing to the crankcase. When the engine is loaded considerably the pressure in the cyllinder is higher and it could then leak into the cooling agent and heat it up.
