2000 Camry: Tapping noise when shifting?
Hi all,
I'm new to the forums... just purchased a 2000 Camry (5-speed manual) and am absolutely in LOVE with it! I just have one little problem that I'm hoping someone may be able to help me out with.
I have been experiencing a fairly loud "tapping" noise when my car idles around 700-750 rpm (usually after the engine is warmed up a bit, such as when I'm sitting at a stoplight after driving for a while). The noise is continuous at that rpm and does not happen at any other time, so I figured it was some loose part that happened to rattle at that resonant frequency. The noise seems to come from the center-right side of the dashboard, although it appears to be pretty far back (like near the firewall). The tapping is loud from within the car, but barely audible when listening from outside with the hood open.
After going through a ditch that shook the car up pretty well, the noise no longer rattles at a certain rpm... rather, it "taps" once every time I engage or disengage the clutch (I am confident that it is the exact same noise). This makes me think that it has something to do with the engine mount.
So... has anyone experienced ANYTHING like this? I am concerned that this noise is coming from a potentially important part, or that the engine mount itself may need repair (eek!). Any experience or suggestions would be really helpful!
Thanks!
Ryan

Not exactly. The tapping happens primarily when shifting, but also happens whenever the car experiences a jolt (such as going over a speed bump). It also happens frequently if i take my foot off the accelerator quickly. I can get it to not tap when I shift if the shift is very smooth.
It sounds like it is coming from under the dash on the passenger side (MUCH louder in the car than outside looking under the hood)
Because the sound isn't exclusively related to shifting, I'm inclined to believe its just a loose part rattling around, not something wrong with the trans itself.
Any thoughts?

Hey all...
We located the problem, it was a bolt securing the top left engine mount that had become stripped. Got a new bolt (10M-1.5 x 60) from the local hardware store and I'll replace it later today.
Total cost of repair: $2.50 (good for me!)
Thanks for the help
