2000 Camry turns over but wont start
Hey all, have a 2000 Camry, 4cyl. Driving the other day and the check engine light came on for a second and then the engine shut off. Checked the timing belt, intact. Checked fuel pressure, good. Put an Ohm meter on the relay, cam sensor, crank sensor, coils. All within tolerance. Pulled each plug wire to check for spark, good to go. I am stumped. I bought the Haines to follow trouble shooting but to no avail. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If the check engine light came on suggest obtaining a code reader and downloading any codes. This is the easiest place to start.

Borrowed one from a friend today. I will try it after work.

Pulled a code, P0110, Intake Air Temperature circuit malfunction. Would that cause the car not to start? put an Ohm meter on the sensor and it checked out. Could it be the PCM went bad?

Not likely the IAT sensor is causing the engine to not start. Did the sensor meet the ohm readings per spec?
Start by checking for ign spark when cranking. PCM seldom fails. If you have the manual spec info check the Crank and Cam sensors. |
I have checked the cam and crank sensor, both within spec. The sensor did work, put a hair dryer on it and watched the ohms change with temperature, up and down.

How about cleaning the IAC valve?
Does the engine die when gas is applied, not applied, both? Is the timing OK. It has happened a belt can shear off a few teeth. The engine still has ign spark but timing is off. Are the fuel injectors still clicking when the engine dies? Use a section of rubber hose as a stethoscope. |
Have not checked the IAC valve. However, it doesn't start so i cant say regarding dying when gas is applied or not. I suspect it may have jumped timing. I can't say regarding the injectors either because it doesn't start. I will check the timing belt and let you know what I find. Thanks for all your help.

try to check for error code use the diagnostic box

Turns out it was the timing belt. Had it replaced along with the water pump. Under $800, not a bad price. Runs like a champ now. Thanks for all of your input. Merry Christmas!
