2002 Camry starting problems

My 2002 Camry (4 cyl engine/standard transmission) has an intermittent problem starting. Nine times out of ten, it will start just fine. One time out of ten it will have difficulty starting or not start at all.

When it has difficulty starting, it turns over very slowly, almost stops turning over, and then turns over a little more quickly and starts

Then there is the situation when it doesn't start, turn the key and it just hums for a few seconds and is silent. Then I wait for 10 minutes and turn the key and it starts, but with difficulty.

The starting problems occur whether the engine is hot or cold. The problem seems to happen more frequently if I have been driving with the lights on.

I have replaced both the battery and the alternator.

Check starter solenoid contacts.

Looking to buy a used drivers fender for my 1995 Toyota Camry LE white.

Its rusted bad at bottom (large section rusted out) and cheaper to buy one than pull off and have someone weld section on. Passenger side in OK shape and rusty but repairable and intact.

What years fit this car. Is it 1992-1996 generation? Thanks. Trying to find a white one also.

Also is it hard to pull off a fender.

Yes.

The part is easy enough to remove. Look at the replacement fenders mounting points to know where to unbolt the old one.

Sorry cgibons and toyomoho, I did not mean to jump on your thread. I should of created a new one. Thanks for response.

What do you mean by starter solenoid contacts? are they something inside the solenoid?

toyomoho 11-09-2017 02:43 PM

Yes.

The solenoid is bolted to the starter motor. Inside the solenoid case is an electromagnetic solenoid and the contacts.

With use, the solenoid contacts become pitted and burned due arcing from the high electrical current.

The contacts can be removed, inspected replaced without taking the starter motor off the engine.

YouTube has numerous videos on replacing the contacts. The parts are available from the dealer or aftermarket.
