I just picked up a new used 2005 Camry XLE with 26k miles on it. It's got all the options, as far as I can tell. The dealer tried to sell me an extended warranty. The offer was $1700 for 5 years, 60k miles. 100% guaranteed, meaning if I don't use it at all, in 5 years I get $1700 back. And they'd throw in 2 years free oil changes.

My questions are:
What are the common failures for this generation of Camry?
What are recommendations of other owners?

I'd be careful of third party extended warranties, usually not worth it. Read the fine print. Will the warranty company be in business in 5 years? Does Toyo cover the remaining warranty?

 

Concur with Pedro on 3rd party warranties.

$1700 also seems high. If a Toyota company warranty you can buy it from any dealer. Often you can find a discount dealer at $600- 900 for the same plan.

Dealer loves to sell these warranties as they receive up front 40-50% of the monies.

Is this 60K miles on top of the 26K?
