94 Camry hard start, runs rough, Please help

I have a 94 Camry V6 Auto that just start randomly shutting off. It was running fine for the last month then it turned off randomly on a few occasions and now it won't start. If press the gas pedal a whole lot you can get it to run a little but once you let the RPM's drop to idle it dies.

Took it to a mechanic and he said the timing belt was put on backwards which sounds like bs to mea as it's been running fine for the last month.
Please let me know of any ideas and how to test/correct them

When was the timing belt installed?

Are you able to work on the engine. If so rotate the crank pulley to 0 degrees with the No 1 cylinder at TDC. Determine if the distributor rotor is at the No 1 cylinder dist cap location. No 1 cylinder is closest to the cam pulley on the cylinder head nearest the firewall.

It has coil packs, not a distributor.

When you fire it up and keep it running with the gas pedal-> how does it run then? Does it run fairly rough? It is absolutely possible for the timing belt to skip a few teeth to create such a condition. You may have misunderstood him when you thought he said it was installed backwards.

Hmm, im guessing ignition or fuel prob. Doubt its fuel your injectors wouldnt just all suck at once, but you should have fuel pressure checked and for ignition have the car put on a scope if possible to read the voltage of spark for each cylinder. Also check you maf sensor.
