Can you describe the problem in more detail?

Is the trans slipping, not engaging into gear, making noise?

It now works OK?

Is the trans fluid level OK, what color is the fluid, how many miles on the trans, what engine-V6 or 4 cylinder?

The trans uses the shift lever to select the drive gear or P/N. This is done manually via the shift cable and lever linked to the valve body inside the trans.

The actually up and down shifting for forward drive gears is controlled by electric solenoids.

The next time it does this try shifting into 1 or 2nd.

Check trans fluid lever when hot, engine running, in parK (after shifting through all the gears into 1st and back). The level should be between the two marks labeled "HOT."

Make sure the trans shift cable is actually moving the shift lever on the side of the trans. You can see this from outside the engine compartment.

Might be a plugged trans filter if fluid never changed but assume if trans fluid is red the trans was serviced some time along the way.

If everything looks good, suggest a fluid and filter change. The issue is that most of the other reasons for the car not moving in any forward gear will be internal problem requiring trans removal.

There are a lot of Camry's out there, perhaps find one being parted out due to a accident.

The trans model is an A140-E.
