Default '95 Camry odd shift sound intermittent

'95 Camry, 2.2 liter, automatic, 240 K miles...has been well maintained. Recently, after starting car and shifting out of park and into reverse (especially), I'm hearing a significant "thwack" sound coming from the top end of the engine, although I'm not yet sure the origin of it. The actual shifting appears normal, when the car is moving and shifting gears all is very normal. But this thwack sound is concerning. It is more pronounced in the a.m. after first start, and may not happen at all the rest of the day. Intermittent, but usually in the a.m. Any ideas out there? Thanks.
Note: motor mounts appear ok.
