Default 98 Camry 2.2/P0171 System too Lean(Bank 1)

Hi all,

this code has come up (randomly) 3 times now within a month.
1 time it had 2, PO171 codes. Each time I went to Advance, and
checked/cleared the code with their scanner.

No change of operation noted, except 1 time when it threw the
code; I noticed the idle going up and down EVER so *slightly*
(not much variation at all, but enough to see the tach going up
and down a tiny amount).

No drive-ability issues at all seemingly for each time it threw
the code(s) though!! Car has 170k on it.

The car runs fine otherwise, runs smooth, idles fine/smooth.
I seem to be coming up with people saying the MAF sensor
could be dirty/need a clean OR an O2 sensor.

BUT, the 6 cyl has a MAF sensor- I'm reading the 2.2l does not
have a MAF- and to check on the MAP sensor??!

I've also read the rest of the recommends- fuel filter, pcv valve,
egr (clean/replace) valve, etc...

I've also read, that a couple people just put in fresh plugs; and
their P0171 code issue went away!!!!!!

I was going to order a new O2 sensor (actually air/fuel ratio
monitor) anyway, just because I recently bought the car; and
wanted to get it replaced (hopefully picking up any MPG I can)
because I can't say the last time it was replaced.

Thanks in advance people!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely, Bob Z.

What is the current MPG?

Issues that can cause the code:
Intake air and exhaust leaks
Fuel pressure/injector plugged
O2-A/F sensor
MAP sensor
Coolant sensor for computer

Change the 02 sensors and determine what happens.

Default 98 Camry 2.2/P0171 System too Lean(Bank 1)

Hey again Joey...

thanks again for responding!!!

I cant say exactly what the mileage is
for sure (haven't really been tracking
this tankful).

However, I'm going on 110 miles; per the
quarter tank its used since filling. And I
think my tank is a 18.5 gallon capacity?!!

Sincerely, Bob Z.

Hello again folks,

just an update for me... I just replaced my A/F ratio sensor
(finally) on my 1998 Camry 2.2l. (as Toyomoho had suggested).

Cleared the code that kept popping up randomly-
P0171 System too Lean(Bank 1)(Sensor 1)

All seems to be fine now- no more light...... THANX
Toyomoho!!!!!!

Will report on mileage soon............!!

Sincerely, Bob Z.

Hi,

its located way up on the exhaust manifold,
near where the manifold meets the engine
(almost). The A/F sensor is a bit more
sophisticated than a regular o2 sensor I'm
to understand.

Price out yourself a "direct fit" A/F sensor,
put a little anti-seize on the sensors threads
before installing; clear your codes out after-
and you should be good to go!!

Sincerely, Bob Z.

Generally, take care of it and I have heard of Camry's going to 300K. Just maintain it and know the trouble spots for your make and model. What exactly happened to the '99? Did it seize, throw a rod, over heat, etc.?
