98 camry erratic shifting ,speedometer and tach
 

I have 98 Camry that is having erratic shifting. the speedometer and tach also jumps around. I have replaced the transmission speed sensor and the instrument cluster. still having the problem, it is intermittent though you may drive 2 miles and it starts or you may drive 300 miles before it starts. any help would be appreciated thanks Carl

The tach is separate from the other circuits. Are you sure the tach is not jumping around because the engine RPM is jumping around?

You are probably right on the tach, what would make the speedo jump around and the erratic shifting? the speed sensor has been change with a new one. The wires and all connections look fine. Is there something else that I should be looking for. thanks Carl

Might be a solenoid on the transmission. These are electric operated.

Might be shift solenoid E (also called SL,this controls the O/D operation. However there are 2 other solenoids.

You might determine if any transmission trouble codes are present.

Assume you checked the trans fluid level.
