98 Camry, misses when cold
 

I have a 98 V6 Camry that has had a random miss at all RPM ranges while the car is cold. Once it warms up it runs fine. I have changed spark plugs, fuel filter, and two of the coils. Any ideas? Thanks

air leak somewhere. metal expands when hot, closes crack.
parasite drain onto engine body from wires.
air to fuel mixture not right.
followed by a plethora of sensors that can cause this.
or, as simple, as dirty air filter.

he most likely has no wires, just coil packs. contacts on those can leak electricity.

I was thinking about that. There are coils on the front 3 cylinders and wires from each coil to a cylinder in the back. It is probably due for new wires.

Also, the air filter was just replaced when I did the spark plugs and oil change.

kizer (kizer soze? The Usual Suspects?) do you know difference between ignition coil and coil pack? You can not have 3 coils. Sounds like you have a V6, yes, you do. Things you mention are coil packs, aka solid state ignition coils, and you have one per each cylinder. wires you referring to are simply power supply and control wires. There is no high voltage in them.
like anything else, they can go bad too.

Yes, the Usual Suspects ( I know it's not spelled correctly). I watched it again recently and it wasn't as good as I remembered it to be. Must be getting old but my 18 year old liked it.

I understand the front 3 cylinders to be coil on plug ignition coils (with high voltage output) each with a single wire to supply voltage to one of the rear spark plugs. I'm going to pull these this morning to check each one with a ohm meter. There is a separate ignition control module that signals for the coil to fire.

Replaced the last original coil and the miss disappeared. I also installed new wires to the rear plugs even though it wasn't necessary. I ordered parts from Rock Auto (great pricing compared to what I could get locally, both items were Beck/Arnley on closeout. Total of $50 including shipping, compared to AZ >$100 + tax) Seems to be running fine again. Thanks.

good. so, you have 3 solid coil packs feeding two spark plugs each? cute. oh, yeah, there was re-design in 1999. I was like - we have 3.0V6 here in the garage, 6 coil packs, what is he talking about...
Usual Suspects is a fairy tale about what a real good bulls-er can do. some are that way. there was another movie, similar concept - guy simply looked around to b-s his way through investigation.
