98 Camry Radiator Fans

I have a 98 Camry 4 cyl 2.2 L.

Issue is with the cooling fans.

I previously replaced the thermostat & ECT sensor/switch.

In stop & go traffic, the temp gauge rises significantly, almost to the red. The fans are not coming on at this point.

I disconnected the sensor at the bottom of the radiator, & the fans will run at full speed. When the a/c is on, the fans work as well.

So, i replaced the radiator sensor, "burped" the cooling system to make sure all air bubbles are gone, and the coolant is flowing properly. There's no cloudiness to the coolant, so no oil mixing in there either.

Unfortunately, the cooling fans are still not kicking on when the temp gauge rises in stop & go traffic. No temp problems while driving on the highway.

Do i replace fan relay no. 1, 2, or 3?

Or would there be another cause to the fans not kicking on, allowing the temp to rise?

its like trial and error, try to have those 3 and check which work.

If you have the old sensor switch test it with an ohm meter (or 12v light bulb circuit) when placed in hot water. The switch should be closed when temps are below approx 199F and open above this.

Disconnecting the sensor is equivalent to the switch becoming open. Make sure the switch is opening.
