98 Camry V6 starting issue

Hello, I'm trying ti help my little brother, he just bought a 98 Camry V6 with 120000 miles on it, when you turn the key, in order to start it , gotta grind on the started for few second untill it fires up, once running doesnt have any problems, runs fine, doesnt miss fire etc. I changed the fuel filter, ploblem not solved. Cold or warm start, same simptoms, for some reason, it'll start normal every once in while, please advice

when my battery was getting weak I had a simliar problem, i had to half turn the key when my battery got really really low for a few seconds to get it started (not a good idea) but going to get your battery tested is a free thing to do.

Once started, what happens when you immediately turn the engine off and attempt to start it again?

Once you started, when u shut it off, you can start it right away without a problem, i wonder if the fuel pump is loosing it's prime.

That's what I thought also.

The engine may still use a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail along with an accumulator.

There is also a check valve inside the pump.

Determine if there is a small black plastic box inside the engine compartment labeled "Diagnostic." If so you can open the box lid then electrically jump the B+ and FP terminals to manually start the fuel pump when the ign key is on. If you can do this try priming the fuel system this way before engaging the starter.

If the engine start normally the fuel system appears to be bleeding down.

Or you can jump the fuel pump located under the passengers lower seat cushion under a sheet metal plate.

It is possible to put a gauge on the fuel system fuel filter but you will need the appropriate line fittings.
