Been having problems starting my 98 camry (2.2). All I get is a click when I turn key. After a number of attempts I usually can get it going but runs rough at first. Was told battery probably needed to be replaced. Did that and changed cable ends too. When hooking it back up the engine started without the key in ignition as soon as the neg cable touched the post. Was told this can't happen but it did. So I put key in ignition and turned to get light etc.. When I turned off and pulled out key engine was still cranking. Had to pull neg cable to stop. Once it runs it seems to be ok but need to know what the problem may be? I thought starter but was told probably not. Please help!!!

 

I think starter...the click is the contact of the starter solenoid which is mounted on the starter. Basically starter and solenoid is one piece. You can go to toyota dealer and probably buy the contacts for the starter...or as they call it starter contact kits....basically 2 big fat flat copper pieces for starter plunger to make contact and pass juice to start car.

Or could be bad starter with a plunger which might now be stuck with the contact points...

Doesn't hurt to check it out... starter is easy to get to and just open up the contact points on the top cover... go to parts fische for toyota camry parts on line website.. or search toyota starter...
