Aligning cam Marks

Aligning cam Marks

Before I took the Head off,
I marked the cam Gears with Whiteout.
as seen from Pass side

1) paint mark on Left cam
- even with Ridge
that valve Cover sets on

2) paint mark on cam Gears,
where left gear Meets right gear.

3) paint mark on Right cam
- even with Ridge
that valve Cover sets on

Now that it is Time to put it back together,
I read the 1994 Toyota Factory Manual,
and it shows a Picture,
where the drivers side of the Cams,
have two sets of Dots.

The lower Dots meet to Align the Cams.

That done,
the White Paint Marks, put on the cam Gears,
before I took the cams off,
do Not do Not align.

What would you do?

This car ran for Years before this repair.

What would you do?

Did you install the service bolt?

As I recall there may be more then one dot on each gear.

How confident are you in your white marks?

If confident set up the cam to the white marks. But first might move the crank to a position where the pistons are below TDC. Supposed to be a non-interference engine but why take chance.

With cams setup to white marks rotate cam pulley to determine if the dots (there may be more then one set) ever line up.

I have used the same procedure as you. I took note of the dots but went by the marks as I knew they were correct and much easier to line up.

that one is very complicated, reason why I ask someone to do cam aligning even installing...
