Bad gas mileage 2008 Camry

I just bought a 2008 Camry SE V6 and am really disappointed in the gas mileage. The car has 33K miles and was a certified used car. After two fill ups I have calculated the gas mileage at 17.4 mpg!! I admit that 65-70% of my driving is city driving but these numbers still don't compare to numbers I have found on various websites.

Anyone else with a V6 that can tell me if this is normal and if not any suggestions for what the cause might be? I traded in my 06 4Runner thinking I would get better gas mileage and so far it is worse.

This seems low, how aggressive is your driving? Try a few longer hwy drives, this typically greatly boosts MPG, can be over 30 mpg.

Might also ask at the Toyotanation website, Camry section.

bad gas milage

My carguy told me that I will need to have the throttle box cleaned, as it accumilates deposits from the gas has a gum/carbon buildup. There are directions how to do this online, type "Camery throttle box cleaning" and it should direct you there. I personally rather pay to have it done.. Hope this helps. my milage went from avg 30 to avg 20 on a 2008 xle 4 cyl.
