Default Coolant fan runs constantly

Hi all,

I just bought a 91 Camry for my daughter and have noticed that one of the coolant fans runs constantly. As soon as you turn the key the fan starts.

The temp gauge never gets above C.

I assume this is probably a fan relay or temp switch issue. How can I test this? Any other ideas? Forgive my ignorance.. I am used to pre 75 cars..

Thanks,
Bret

I'll assume 4 cylinder and cooling fan on PS, not A/C fan on DS.
Fan switch is located on bottom of rad, left side as you face the rad. Disconnect the connector andjump the contacts in the connector.Turn on engine and if fan does not run then the switch is defective. Aftermarket switches are available.

Yes you are correct on all assumptions.

I will test it out.

Thank you.

I was wrong. Both fans run all the time.

I have looked for a fan switch at the bottom of the rad and there is none. They run into the relays in the 'engine fuse box' .

It is a 2.0 auto, with ac

I pulled the fuse and got the fans to stop and the car still never got to the half way point on the temp gauge.

Engine side by lower rad hose?

2.0 as in Japanese 2.0 or 2.2L? There needs to be a switch somewhere on the cooling circuit. How about on thermostat housing?

Sorry for the confusion. It is the 3S-FE . I finally found the switch it is under the alt on the housing there. I was able to jump it and the fans stopped!

I then reconnected it until I could get a new part started the car and no-fans. So it seems to have been a loose connection.

Thanks for you help it really did help there are way too many switches on the housing to the rad and I was stuck thinking it HAD to be one of them. Not the lone one on the housing from the rad.

Thanks,
Bret

If the engine continues to not heat up then that would be a separate issue. It is either a malfunctioning gauge or sender orthe thermostat.

It gets warmer with the fans not on all the time but it still doesn't seem to be as warm as I would expect. I plan to replace the t-stat this weekend.

I changed the t-stat. It was stuck open not a big surprise. Now if finally runs at the correct temp. Now to work on that pesky idle vibration.
