Default Driver's window won't open

Hi folks,

Three days ago my driver's window stopped opening.

After doing some online researching, I came across this YouTube video:

I tried what the video recommends (resetting all 4 windows). But it did not work. It may have been because I did not disconnect my battery. But I did leave the car on when I tried.

I'll try to see if I can disconnect my battery and try resetting the windows again.

In the meantime, does anyone know any other troubleshooting task that I can do before taking the car to a mechanic?

Any tip will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Do either the driver or passenger window switches work?

Do the other windows work?

Resetting windows is typically for resetting special settings and not up and down window motion.

Progress so far:

I have learned how to use a multimeter.

I have been able to figure out the 2 fuses that control the driver's window. I learned this by watching a YouTube video:

I have been able to confirm that my fuses are good.

The next step is to check the window switch and motor. I'm educating myself on that right now.

Stay tuned.

By the way, if this proves to be above my paygrade, who handles such repairs? Autobody or regular mechanic?

Do the door locks work? They have most of the same power sources as the windows.

Do all other windows work using either the drivers master switch or individual door switch? If so the window power sources should be OK.

The drivers window switch setup is slightly different then the other windows. If you remove the door panel the motor will have two wires. The 12V DC power polarity is changed via the switch to change the motor rotation and window up/down action.

The master power window switch gangs the switches for the windows and would have the same power sources.

Suppose the motor could have failed or the switch. Check if the motor wires are receiving +/- 12v when the switch is moved and that the polarity changes when the switch is moved in the opposite direction. If 12 power here then the test the motor.

Note sure who handles these items. The internet list auto repair places advertising as "auto electric" If the window never works as opposed to intermediate then it should be straight forward to diagnose and fix.

toyomoho,

Thanks for trying to help me.

This has proven to be a strange experience. Having tried trouble-shooting to see whether I could get my driver's window to open, I finally decided that opening up the door to check the window switch and motor was something I did not want to do.

I was now planning to take the car to a neighborhood mechanic whom I had been told specializes on electrical issues.

However, two days ago I was driving to my local supermarket. It was a warm day in Boston so I rolled down the front passenger window. When I arrived at the supermarket, I parked my car, and went in to shop.

When I returned to the car, I realized that I had forgotten to close the passenger window. Anyway, as I was about to drive away, I shut the window. I also decided to try to open the driver's window (I had tried a million times with no luck). To my shock, it opened! The driver's window now opens and closes whenever I use the switch.

I have no idea why the driver's window now works. The only thing I can think of is that I opened the front passenger window all the way and left it open while I shopped. Before, when I was trying to fix my problem and checking all my windows, I would only open them partially, not all the way. This time, I opened the front passenger window all the way as I drove to the supermarket. Could this have solved the problem?

Don't know?

The window mechanism would limit switches. Perhaps the switch being engaged at open did something.

Has happened air temperatures can cause electrical issues.
