emissions test failure. what now?

1991 toyota camry. failed emissions test. Nox okay. High CO/HC. Mechanic wants 450$ to rectify problems. Not willing to spend. But can spend upto 50-100 bucks. Anyone knows people in Houston who can help? OR fuel additives that will help?

Give this stuff a try www.auto-rx.com
I did on my 94 Camry and it passed like a new car.
It may take awhile but it's worth it.

Every Smog Test Suggestions

I've passed many cars in California using some techniques I picked up.

Always run your engine hot. As hot as you can get it.
They say," run your car in 2nd gear on the freeway".
I've even run some coolant out of some problem cars to increase the heat.

Some octane booster never hurts. If you fill up with a higher octane it will screw with your ratios, but one tall can of octane booster will make the fuel more likely to burn.

Air intake should be clean and free from debris. Clean all of your linkage with some carb/intake cleaner.

Always check the PVC valve and vaccum hoses. Once vaccum hose cracked on an emissions controls component can keep you from passing.

Other than that, general tune up stuff usually will do the trick.

dumb idea dont take out coolant or run in 2nd gear, unless you want to reduce the engines lifetime....

Taking the coolant out is risky, but in California u r required to smog the vehicle when you sell it. It worked great on an old hunker with a steel engine.
The only need to run for a year for this kid and he's been driving it for two more.
