Default Error code P1410 on 99 Camry

So I used a code reader to look into the check engine light that had been on for about a week. The code it showed was P1410, with the message "EGR Valve Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction." Okay, so there is a problem with the EGR valve I suppose. Should I automatically replace it? If so, how difficult a job is it for someone who is only semi-handy?

My Camry has 107k miles on it. Thanks.

By the way, I have not noticed any symptoms whatsoever. The car seems to be running as well as it always has. Is it possible that there was a one-time malfunction and that the car is okay. Should I just erase the error code and see if it comes back. I assume that if the problem continues, the check engine light will simply come back on.

I'd erase it and if it comes back then replace it. This should help some:

I wouldn't automatically replace the EGR yet, it is expensive. The valves are robust and can be cleaned fairly well when removed, especially with only 107K miles. It isgood preventive maintenence to clean it.Yours has a position sensor (which I understand can fail) that might need replacing if you can buy it separate from the valve. If the code comes back I'd test the position sensor. I'd also check the VSVas well asvalve operation.Valve operation can be testedby using a hand vacuum pump to actuate the valve open at idle and see if the engine stalls. If it stalls then the valvediaphram is OK and the valve is opening and closing. As OnE_To_Hate suggested just erase thecode for now and see if it comes back. TheEGR is not necessary for engine operation unless it is leaking or stuck open, thenyourcar won't idle. An inoperable EGR can cause engine pinging and emissions failure.
