evap leak above the gas tank 93 camry 2.2
 

i have a evap leak above the gas tank which reuires to drop the tank. has anyone had this issue? if so where was the leak comming from? i know i wont know till i drop the tank. wanted to see if anyone had this issue. im in california and this is whats not makeing my car pass smog i can smell gas from the evap leak at the outside drivers rear door. i dont want to have to pay bucks a month to drive around on a permit and a more chance getting pulled over. im suprised with the leak it isnt throwing a light on and runs so damn good :). anyways any advice is appreciated thanks.

Typical leak areas are rust through at the steel gas filler tube or steel flange that bolts to the tank. Dropping the tank is not difficult. Once the tank is off, the leak should be obvious.

The 93 emissions system may not have capability to monitor this type of leak. Not all systems are monitored by computer.

Years ago fuel tanks were vented to the atmosphere, this changed with the requirement to contain the fuel vapors for emissions purposes. The engine does not care if the tank is vented or not as long as the fuel is able to get to it.
