Default Ignition Issue_Camry SXV20R_5S-FE

Hoping someone can assist me.

Model:Camry SXV20R
Engine: 5S-FE (4 cyl)
Prod.Date 12/00
Current KMS: 59,000 (36,000 mls)

Issue: Number 2 cylinder is not firing.

Diagnostic procedure:

Timing light on all HT leads indicated No 2 not firing.
Checked spark plugs, cleaned a swapped No2 plug with other.
Result: Failed (No2 no spark)

Checked HT leads, all resistance within specifications.
Changed No 2 lead.
Result: Failed (No2 no spark)

Changed ignition coil.Swapped (#1) 1/4 and (#2) 2/3 since they are both the same.
If ignition coil was faulty, when swapped over, should have No4 cyl not firing.
Result: Failed (No2 no spark)

I've checked the coil plug terminals, and have 12v on an external terminal and ground on the other. The middle ones,IG and IGF, I'll try and test for continuity back to ECU.

Am I on the right track?

Any help from the forum would be most welcomed.

Cheers

Bjorn (Brisbane,Australia)

Greetings Bjorn:

Need more info on ign setup as your car not being USA model may have variations don't know about.

You state No 2 is not firing. Have you replaced the installed spark plug with another installed in the removed spark plug holder and directly watched for spark?

The ign has no distributor but cam and crank sensors?

The ign system has two ign coils/igniters, each firing two cylinders? Or does each cylinder have its own coil/igniter?

Greetings to you Joey, and thank you for your interest.

No distributor / two ign coils/igniters #1(1-4) #2 (2-3)

Your advice should have been taken early in the process. The #2 spark plug was at fault and all spark plugs replaced. The vehicle now preforms to specification.
However a steep learning curve was experienced, having spent time checking continuity back to ECM. Considering my local mechanic wanted to replace both ign coils/igniters, I have come out the process cheap.

A pleasant and safe Christmas to you all .
