lifter/valve noise
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and looking for a little help. I just recently purchased a 2010 Camry 2.5 engine, auto trans. And I noticed a noise coming from the engine when driving with a cold engine. It doesn't matter if it's in the morning or if the car has sat all day at work. It sounds like tapping/ ticking in the engine. The car has only 45,200 miles on it. I bought at a ford dealer and don't remember the noise when test driving it. They seem to think its normal and made an appt with the local Toyota dealer for me. I'm posting a YouTube link so hopefully someone can give me some advice.. http://youtu.be/GLmHEwgkY0Q
Thanks a lot Frank |
Find a section of hose or pipe to use a stethoscope. When engine is cold use stethoscope to narrow down the location of the noise. Check the valve cover area, area on engine facing the passengers side (where the assy belts are) and both lower on the engine and at the top.

Here's a you tube video of it see if any one can make it out towards the end. I put it in gear and held the brake while I ran the rpm's up a bit. Thanks Frank |
Hear the tap but unless you can narrow down the area of the noise the best bet is the Toyota dealer.
This engine is known for rattles, taps and buzzes. And there is not much you can do about it unless there is a Toyota fix out, which would require taking the engine apart. Please post back with what the dealer states, if anything. They might just state its "normal." |
Ok, here's what the dealers service dept said: totally normal. Until oil pressure builds the sound will be there.
He went on to say it's a Toyota thing. Maybe change to a different oil to see if that helps. Selling dealer(ford) said they put in 0w-20. But who knows for sure. Might pick up some Mobil 1 and a filter and see for myself. Any one else have suggestions for oil or additive for the noise. Thanks Frank |
0w-20 ? is that the recomended oil ?
