piston ring question

i took my engine apart to rebuild and old rings have a 2t stamp on it what does it mean 2.2l 5sfe

toyomoho 04-26-2014 07:32 PM

Could be the engine had 3 sizes of standard piston diameters. Check piston for a mark stamped 1, 2 or 3.

The block would also be marked on the oil return hole side with a number 1-3 next to each cylinder.

If No 2 piston then No 2 ring would make sense or ?

ok just got some new rings in and outer diameter is same inner is smaller is this okay or should i try to find a new set

piston rings

my old ones appear to be 4mm and new ones 3 mm will this make a difference 5sfe 2.2

toyomoho 04-27-2014 12:02 PM

What year of engine?

Ring dimensions changed for 1999+ 5SFE engines to 1.5, 1.5, 3 mm. Prior year engines were 1.2, 1.2, 3 mm.

If reusing factory pistons, buy rings based on year of engine. New rings should be same dimensions as old.

Only 1 P/N is listed for stock pistons.

Why old rings are marked 2T don't know.

auh just ask original owner he said motor came out of 91 celica gt made 7/91 will that make a difference

toyomoho 04-27-2014 10:47 PM

Yes.

Celica appears to have changed ring design after 8/91.

1.5, 1.5, 3 AND 4 mm are offered for this year.

When shopping for rings, use the info for the engine, not car.

Measure old rings and compare to what is offered for this year of car engine.

so i need to find and buy a 4mm set and not use 3 mm set

toyomoho 04-28-2014 08:32 AM

Yes.

Check out the selection of rings at rockauto.com for year/model and make of engine (not car). Both sizes are listed.

The width of the compression rings varied with year and model of 5SFE, 1.2 and 1.5 mm.

Get the same size as the old rings.

Return old rings stating they are not the same as what is on the engine. Perhaps the same source can get the other rings but make sure the width of ALL rings is the same as what you have now.
