Rear Break Light Stay on or come on randomly with the car off
We need some help on this one. Hopefully someone has seen this before or knows what this could be.
After putting the car in park and turning off the car sometimes the rear break lights stay on. Sometimes the rear break lights will come on after we have turned the car off too. This is horrible because the rear break lights wear down the battery and sometimes we have needed a jump because of this problem. The rear break lights will sometimes come on randomly as we are driving too (even though the car could be going 60 mph - we aren't touching the break pedal at all, and the breaks are not being applied in any fashion - the rear break lights just come on). Here is another clue: If we depress the break pedal after we turn off the car the rear break lights will turn off and everything is OK. The rear break lights will not come on randomly if we remember to depress the break pedal after we turn off the car. We took the car to Goodyear and they ran diagnostics and said they adjusted the switch that senses the depression of the break pedal. But unfortunately this was to no avail. If somebody has another idea about this especially if you've seen the same problem and resolved it we would appreciate your ideas! Thanks!! |
It could be the brake light switch is sticking or bad.
The brake switch you spoke about is up under the dash. Follow the brake pedal arm up under the dash. The switch is a push button type. When the brake pedal is pushed, the brake pedal arm pushes on the switch to close, when the pedal is released the switch opens. You don't care about brake pedal position but if the button on switch working. The switch is connected to 2 wires with push on connectors. Find the switch. The next time the problem happens have someone watch the brake lights as you move the brake pedal and listen for the switch clicking as it turns on and off. If possible push the button on the switch manually. Perhaps the switch is sticking closed. If none of the above results in the brake lights going out disconnect one wires from the switch. Unless there is a wiring problem the lights should now go out. Based on the above tests you should be able to determine if the switch is the problem. |
