Spark Plug Removal 1MZFE Engine Question
 
Any tips on changing plugs on a 1995 Toyota Camry V6 1mzfe engine with 185000 miles. I purchased it from my brother in law and was well maintained but cant find anything on plugs. Car runs fine but sometimes hard to start and never checked plugs.


Three plugs front have three coil packs(never removed these type) and three on the back but just spark plug wires.


I have changed plugs many times but concerned since if I damage the front plug wires I must replace the coil pack.


Do I just twist back and forth like I normally do.

The non-coil pack plug wire end socket, plugs into a socket on the coil pack. The spark plug wire end socket has a push to release clip that needs to be disengaged to pull it free of the coil pack socket. Be gentle or you can break the clip.

Remove the ign harness wiring plug which has its own retaining clip built into the harness plug. Again be careful. Once you know how one clip disengages, the remaining will be easy.

Each coil pack is bolted to the engine, remove the bolt. Then gentle pull out the coil. The lower part of the coil plugs into spark plug.

The non coil plug wire install the same way as a coil pack but has no bolt. The boot at the top and the spark plug tip retainer at the end of the long ign plug going into the engine hold it to the engine.

Thank you . Makes sense. I will take my time for sure. I do not think these plugs were changed in a while since I just changed the PVC and it would not come out and broke off. I had to pull it out with a needle nose and then using my hand vac connected to a small rubber hose, vacuum out any potential small plastic particles. Below the pcv was a ledge so any pieces should of fallen on the ledge. I have changed hundreds of PCVS and never had an issue. This one has been sitting for a while. Thanks again.

It was late and needed a car for tomorrow so was only able to buy one kind from Oreillys that was available. Unfortunately, it did not fit so duck taped it in. Car is only driven a few miles a day. Started and runs fine. Will check OEM schematic tomorrow for correct one.

Figured it out. PCV valve loose since needs grommet. All good.

The PC valve can be problem to remove! The grommet can harden with age.

Replaced the PCV valve and grommet.

Removed the front three coil plugs (2,4,6 cylinders). Gently unclipped wires, labeled everything, removed bolts, twisted back and forth coils a bit and came out pretty easily to my surprise except one. Just need to gently rotate back and forth a few more minutes on that plug. Good advice on the wires. You need to push the clip down and jiggle them out. Can easily break clip.

Plug results -

White electrode
White somewhat dirty overall appearance ( used to seeing a normal light brown tint)
Gap should be 0.043 inches and was able to slip in 0.045 easily
Electrode tip looks worn down. Have not bought new ones yet.
Plugs came out but may of been there a while since they were a little hard to turn out.

Question

Thought back plugs were coil less but are not and somewhat blocked by intake manifold.

Manual suggests to remove plenum but prefer not to. I figure if I can pull it out 2 inches I can bend the plug a little since the other half is flexible with only rubber. They will likely not pull out straight due to plenum.

It can be done without taking off the plenum.

The issue is access to the plugs. Use 2 ea 6-inch extensions, a plug socket having a rubber gripper and a ratchet.

You might need to remove a few minor parts for some plug access.
