Steering Intermediate Shaft replacement

My car is Toyota Camry 2000 year make. I have an issue with power steering. The steering wheel has become hard and it is very noticeable while making turns. I gave it at a service center and I was told the issue is with 'U-joint' and the entire 'Steering Intermediate Shaft' needs to be replaced. I got a quote of $700. Is this a reasonable quote ?

Read the link below:

Toyota has had issues with this U-joint on other year and model cars.

However all U-joint problems are not the same as in requiring part replacement.

Symptoms were typically hard steering and or clunk when steering.

Many owners have had success in solving the hard steering problem by greasing the shaft in the area shown in one of the posts at the link. I suggest you try this first.

The quote seems high. You can also ask at the Toyotanation website.

The problem is not an immediate hazard, the steering system will not break. Thus get the facts before you have someone fix it, if you chose this route.
