Subtle Shake at 75 mph

2007 Avalon Limited XLE 112,000

One of my kids came in for thanksgiving with his car so I did my usual checks. Came from a 6 hr drive highway.

I will tell you what I did and then the results and see if your conclusion/opinion is close to mine.

I spent the day
Cleaning inside and out.
Waxing.
Checking brakes.
inspecting underside,
Checking all Fluids and changing fluids that required changing.
Checked front end

Results that are out of the norm

1. Replaced right front tire( Brought tire in to Just Tires). Two gouges in the sidewall noticed when cleaning, Very deep gouges!
Luckily they were able to install and balance new tire on rim.
Other tires about 4 years old and have a lot of tread left. Assurance TouringTred. All other tires fine. This could be the issue?

This car was sold to me which was given to my son so road rash damage was from a while ago. I never noticed the gouges. It is driven properly now.

2.There is some road rash on other rims but tires fine but could be out of balance. Should have them balanced.

3.Drivers tie rod - Was able to turn it a little. Right one solid.
Need to replace and align. This could be the issue since they should not turn which means they are a little loose.
No work done on front end ever except alignment a while ago.

4. Can turn sway bar link on drivers. I think they could be loose.

5. Ball joints good. No movement up and down. Place crowbar under tire.

6. Shake tire side to side - Forgot to check this. Will do tonight.

I have not tested on highway yet.

Thanks

1) Is/was the driver hitting curbs? In the close up of the gouge can see a scuff mark.
2) Check for a bent rim.
4) Link will turn but joint should be should be stiff, not loose.
6) Good idea.

Rotate tires and determine if shake changes.

We bought the car from a relative who used it as a business car so the road rash was there before we bought it. I bought it and its been in use for a few years for my son for college. The curb hitting stopped when I bought it. I knew it had some road rash but I did not look close enough.

Will check the other three rims, check front rims for wobble and thanks for feedback on link.

Much appreciated.

Took it for a drive and at 75 mph there does not appear to be a shake and braking no shake so maybe that bad tire was the issue? It drives smoothly at all speeds.

I did check both front tires to see how much play is in the right and left tire. It appears to be a little play on both sides but that could be due to the half shaft normal play. Not sure. Tie rods not loose.

When he returns for the holidays will have the other three tires balanced and alignment checked.
