Cheapo Air Intake Worth it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...m350063281806&Hey guys, just wondering, is this cheapo air intake worth it. Also, how difficult is it to put it, and would extra things be needed (heat sheild). I know, wouldn't improve power, but sound is always great!

K&N states a 5 HP at around 3K RPM gain on their product. Most people report no noticeable effect on performance other then an increase in intake noise.

Products are easy to install.

RE: Cheapo Air Intake Worth it?

I have that same intake in my 99 Camry and I have noticed a big difference. I spoke with a guy who races professionally and I asked him if it was worth spending the extra loot to buy an expensive intake and he told me no. In the end, the pipe is just a pipe, you can go down to Home Depot and make your own intake. If there is any HP gains to be had by a K&N intake, its going to be the filter that makes the difference, not the pipe. You can buy the cheapo intake (like I did) and slap a K&N short ram filter on it ($30-$40) and you will spare yourself the $300 and reap the same benefits. By the way, the sound of that intake you are looking at is incredible! Last night when I was getting ready to leave work, I reved my engine twice and set off the car alarm of the car next to me!!! Have fun!

Hahahah! Sounds cool Octapulse. I just have another question, I notice there are sensors that go into the stock airbox, where do those go after the installation of that new intake? Also, would I need to purchase a heat shield? Thanks!

That would be the AIT (air intake temperature) sensor. On the intake pipe you are getting, there are three open ports on the sides of it. One big and one small port on the left side, one small on the right. the small one on the right is for the evaporation tube which you will also find connected to the stock air box. The small one on the left is for the tube going to the side of the valve cover. The big port is for the AIT sensor. You will find that when you pull out the rubber grommet out of the side of the air box (The AIT sensor is conical and slides out of the grommet with a little pull, and the grommet is fitted to the air box wall with a groove) that it is too big to fit into the big port on the new pipe. What I did was went to Autozone, and purchased some silicone gasket sealant, and applied it to the flat ring at the base of the sensor, then pushed it against the port and taped it in place to dry. there are alot of different ways you can go about it, but it is important to do, because you wont be able to pass smog without that AIT sensor in place.

I didnt purchase a universal intake, mine was specific for my car (99 Camry 4cyl). The alot of em by the same seller for the 6cyl engine but only one for the 4cyl. And buy the way, it fits perfect.

My point was not to put inexpensive products on your car it is not worth it to me. Stick to factory products like TRD or get K&N intake kits/filters. I have a CAI but I will put the factory air box with TRD filter back on soon. I am just speaking from experience.
