'04 Camry Check Engine Light
 

Hey guys, I'm running into a problem with getting new tags for my '04 Camry. It's almost time to get new tags and the check engine light is on. When I took it in to Kinecht's & AutoZone, they both came up with the same code (Bank 1 O2 Sensor). When I replaced the O2 sensor, The light remained on yet the car runs fine. I even tried using the odm to reset the computer after swapping out thee o2 sensors. That didn't work. So when I went to disconnect the battery and connect it back up ten minutes later, the car was sputtering for the next few days (and the light was OFF) but then finally went back to normal and the light came on.

It's throwing me off.. The car runs rough when the light is off but runs completely fine when the light is on. Please Help!

What were the exact code numbers?

Could be disconnecting the battery caused the computer to need to reset or go into to some kind of default mode and the result was a rough engine. You can't reset codes on this year of car by disconnecting the battery. Need to clear using the code reader.

Could be O2 sensor are bad, computer takes time to run checks but until complete engine runs bad. Then once checks complete, light goes on, computer reverts to a default operational mode (sensor(s) bad and runs better.

Could also be that the cat is bad.

Bank 1, Sensor 1 heater circuit.

What engine type, 4 or 6 cylinder?

Did you replace the correct sensor?

The issue could also be a short or open in wiring to the sensors heater. The computer checks for excess power drain or open circuit but does not know if this is the sensor or the wiring.

Or bad computer.

What brand/type of sensor did you use? And was it a "universal" or built to fit a specific car?
