1988 camry purchase - needs water pump

Some shops are saying that we should have the timing belt replaced while mechanic is there. Replacement engine has 75k on it. Should I be purchasing a timing belt + watsr pump kit, or just purchase the 2 specific parts?

Are you going to DIY or pay a shop?

The idea is once the engine is apart, the extra cost to replace the pump is small compared to the labor to get to it if it fails.

Most DIY owners replace it every other belt change as a precaution. That stated your next belt change would be in another 60K miles.

What is the difference in total cost between changing WP and just changing the belt?

Note to, when the timing belt cover is off. Inspect the cam/crank and oil pump seals for leaking.

The belt rides on two bearings to route it and maintain pressure. Best to replace these.

Get a decent quality timing belt that states it is made from highly saturated nitrile or high-temperature neoprene.

Belts do break without warning. However there should be no damage to the engine as the valves will not hit the pistons.
