1991 camry 4 cyl. no spark
Hi folks. I have this 91 camry. Coil shows go on ohm meter. But what they call pickup coil or signal generator shows open on one circuit. Do I have to change whole distributor just for that part. And can someone tell me how to check igniter. the book is confusing. Thank you

What info source are you using?
Don't think there is a source for just the pickup coil? Typically Toyota does not list a method to check the igniter. |
ok I just got a used distributer and that solved problem. Thanks

Great!

Well now the engine runs but no charging. The distributor cap had been arcing badly and probably shorted the coil pickup. Could it also short the alternator. I checked fuses?
|
Not sure the cap arcing caused the sensor issue, the sensor can just fail over time. Of course best to change the ign components.
Is the alt light on? Doubt if the ign system issues would have anything to do with the alt issues. Fuses used by alt are Ign, Charge and Engine. Fuse boxes are in engine compartment and behind drivers side kick panel. |

Replaced alternator now charging. I believe very old distributer cap let high voltage arc to pickup coil and aparently then to alternator. Thank for info

Alt system is separate from ign system, doubt arcing would cause an alt failure.
As to the sensor, sometimes the sensors just fail. Arcing might cause the coil to fail. |
Understand. Funny thing the coil still shows proper ohms although charred around the high voltage contact. Thanks
