1996 camry automatic 2.2 won't start when engine hot. Cranks fine, won't turn over.
 

My wonderful 96 Camry has recently developed a new problem. Won't start when engine is hot. Have to let it cool for 15-30 minutes to restart. Cranks, but won't turn over. Raw gas smell. When driving, will experience sudden heavy vibration and drop in rpms when stopping. Threatens to stall unless press on gas and brake simultaneously. Have replaced starter and has new coil. Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the IAC valve. An internet search will produce hits on how to do this.

Did you check for ign spark when it doesn't start.

Might check fuel pressure.

When does the shudder issue occur, hwy speeds, stop and go, etc?

Thanks for the help. We will check and clean the valve. There is a spark and the fuel pump appears to be working fine. The "shudder" occurs once the engine has warmed up to some degree...there is a sudden vibration or shudder and then the rpms drop significantly (to around 300) and the engine threatens to cut off if I don't give it additional fuel. Strong raw gas odor and black exhaust when the engine cuts out or when it refuses to ignite. There have been occasional slight hesitations or "pulses" at highway speeds, but up until now it has run fine unless I am slowing to a stop. Any other thoughts would be most welcome. Always starts up again after cooling down for 15-30 minutes. Thanks!

would it help if you put water on the engine to make it cold for a long time.
