1997 Toyota Camry LE Acceleration Problems (Sorry, New to this forum thing)

Ive been having acceleration/power issues with my 1997 toyota camry LE.
This is what ive been expoeriencing:
-Check Engine light is always on
-When in D, the acceleration is very slow 0-20mph and the engine shakes/vibrates/Check Engine light flashes until it goes beyond 2000 rpms then accelerates normally and smoothly. What I usually do is shift it to a lower gear L and when it gets to 2000 rpms, I shift it back to D to get it accelerating at a steady pace.
-Sometimes when in Idle, the engine/steering wheel vibrates slightly until i begin to accelerate again.
It has about 250,000 miles or so on it, im just not sure of what the problem could be. Im not sure what to check or where to start. People tell me it could be the spark plugs or the transmission.
Any help or advice appreciated! :)

If check engine light is flashing then dangerous to drive car as fault could cause converter damage due to overheating.

The car has ODBII, as such if check light on any codes can be read out. Suggest start by getting codes read out. In most states an autoparts store will read out or lend out a code reader for free. Call around.

It could be a trans problem, poor ignition or excess fuel problem.

When you have the codes post back.
