I have a 92 Toyota Camry 2.2L 4 cylinder. 186k. I recently obtained a vehicle and I performed minor maintenance. To get it back in decent shape. Come to find out that the reverse gear doesn't work. All the gears work perfectly fine. I found out that I lost reverse this past sunday. I was gonna drive it up to visit my family. How would I adjust the reverse band on a pre-ODII system with out tripping a code. I was going to perform a transmission flush this friday to get some new fluid in it. I feel I am unable to do so now that the reverse gear is inoperable. Any tips, tricks, advice and or ideas to help. I got a quote for a trans rebuild. It's about $1,900 with out tax. So I'm guessing about $2k $2,100-$2,200 with tax.

No reverse could be caused a struck shift valve that changing the fluid might solve (or not). But most likely a bad one-way clutch, coast brake or reverse brake. These items require taking the trans apart. Its a reasonably common issue and tends to occur due to lack of trans fluid changes the result being wear.

Is the quote to rebuild for your trans or a third party rebuilt unit?

For now can always park car so not needing reverse.

It's from a local shop. Leons transmission out in California. Where I'm currently residing.

Does the price include installation? Any warranty?

If including installation and the trans installed is rebuilt (not used), the price is within the range of typical quotes. Make sure the shop replaces the torque converter which has a clutch that can fail. Also the converter is filled with dirty trans fluid that could now have metal debris from a worn or damaged trans. Don't want this debris getting into the rebuilt trans.

If your short of cash and know individuals who work on cars for extra cash your have a few options. Buy your own rebuilt trans and have this friend install it or buy a used trans. A rebuilt trans is about $1300 plus core exchange, used perhaps 1/2 or less depending on where you buy it.
