93 camry XLE overheating

Hi. I have a 93 camry 3.0 XLE. Been having problems with overheating. Lately it has been chugging specially on the freeway. Anybody have any ideas why this is? thanks.

Can you elaborate on the overheating issue? When does the engine overheat, freeway, stop and go, right from engine warm up when cold, etc?

Do you often need to add more coolant?

What does chugging mean?

Does the overheating start when the chugging starts?

Did the engine overheat before the chugging began or after?

Thanks for the reply. When running my car is fine, but when in traffic it starts to overheat. It sort of feels like when you play with the accelerator. (something like step then release on the gas pedal.) Had an oil change and tune-up recently but no change.

Overheats often after leaving freeway. As soon as I hit traffic light my car starts to heat up.

In stop and go traffic the engines cooling system uses fans located behind the radiator to pull air through the radiator. Make sure there fans are working.

The cooling system/radiator system could also need flushing or have other issues.

Slower driving speeds means less air going through the radiator. If the cooling system is not working at 100% it may not be able to compensate for this and keep the coolant temp down.
