99 Camry excessive gas use
 

I bought a 99 Camry, 4 cyl for my 2nd car. 250,000 miles. I can watch the fuel gauge as I drive, go lower and lower. It smells of gas while running if I am outside the car. I used to have a 97 Camry 6 cyl that would go forever on a tank of gas. Also, on this car, it takes a long time to get up to speed. I can't give it too much gas on the foot feet because I'm afraid it will go into the red zone.
I Used to have a 97 Camry 6 cyl that got great gas mileage. I'm sure there are many reasons that the car uses so much gas, but was just wondering if there is a reasonable solution that doesn't cost a fortune,

Is the check engine light on?

Find someone with an ODBII scanner and determine if there are any pending codes. A good scanner can help locate the problem area.
