Dealer wants to change out air box on my 2010 Camry---$2K

New to the forum so hoping members can help me.....

My 2010 Camry with upgraded A/C system will not completely close off the defrost vents when using the A/C regardless of where I set the vent flow; dash, floor, etc. I've changed out the amplifier and the local dealership has changed out the passenger side servo motor with no positive changes. They went back in again and checked the servo and wiring harness--both check out OK. They tell me the next step is to change out the air box and they want $2K to do that; they also tell me the servo motor on the drivers side(the one that's pretty easy to get to)does not control the dampers on the defrost outlets but I've been told otherwise. The Toyota on-line parts catalog says differently if I am reading it correctly.

Can anyone help...sure don't want to shell out a couple of grand to have them tear the dash apart again! Thanks.

Any change in defrost output when changing between DEF and FOOT/DEF?

Thanks JoeyP---will check that out and see if there are changes in airflow output

JoeyP.....does not seem to change much when switching between the two. Still have a pretty good stream of air coming thru the defrost vents when the a/c is switched to dash only vents.

If the problem is the air outlet servo motor or door, Toyota shows the blower assy and A/C unit must come out as a unit to access them.

Might post at the Toyotanation.com forum to determine if someone has managed to replace the air outlet servo without taking dash off..

Taking the dash board off is labor intensive.

A Toyota dealer is generally more expensive then third party repair shops. Get a few quotes from third part shops or live with the problem.

I know this thread will be 3 years old in a few months - but I wonder what the outcome was? Sounds sort of similar to my situation.. I was fortunate that the dealer I bought it from brought it to a Toyota dealership to have it repaired while honoring the 30 day warranty.. My dealer mentioned the Toyota dealer shop said it was related to a situation involving 'communication to a servo', but I don't know the speciifics. The photo below is my Camry before I took delivery of it - the dealer replaced the entire unit as shown in the second photo. After that, the modes still weren't working (dash vents only) and heat only. After my dealer tried fixing it, worked for day, then dash vents only and no heat. I can see why the repair would be $2K, or even more.

Brutal is right! I showed this to a guy that replaced an engine, He was like holy ..... I said but you've replaced an engine -
He said he would rather do that than this job!

And sorry to 'hijack' this thread,
