New Guy with Q on 2016 SE

Hi all. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2016 Camry SE with 127,000 miles on it from a family member's estate. I'd just like to know the general consensus on these cars. I see the 2016 has the JD Power award for whatever it is.

At this mileage are there things to look out for?

I'm a car guy and have been for 45 years or so. I do all my own work (unless I really don't wanna lol). This car is for moms. It will be her last ride but I don't want to stick her with a money pit.

Welcome to CF.

The car should not be a money pit. Like any other car it will need routine upkeep. Its the 7 generation which has been around since 2012.

The 4 cylinder engine has been around since 2012ish and also used in other models. As such the bugs should have been worked out. Its a very reliable engine. Some years had issues of rattling when cold started but it didn't seem to effect its life. Check for a leaking or noisy water pump. Use synthetic oil and change it regularly. Consult the owners manual for oil weight as it may list a higher viscosity for hotter climates or sustained high speed driving. The engine has a canister oil filter (paper) thus read up about how to change the filter. It needs a canister wrench which is commonly available.

Check the trans for proper shifting, flare, harsh shifts, etc. Toyota tended to get too clever with their trans designs to get better MPG. Find out if the trans fluid was ever changed. As with any auto trans worn out fluid is the No 1 cause of failure. Don't do a flush or use chemicals, just replace the fluid. Make sure you use the right fluid! The trans may not have a dipstick thus read up on the internet about this. Toyota uses a color chart to check trans fluid condition but if never changed it needs it.

Some complaints about rear brakes wearing out faster then normal.

Drive the car and give it once over check.

Thanks pal. I have a 2011 Lexus so its probably the same type of oil filter.
