Default We think the teenager is “borrowing” the Camry, late nights!

Just doing some late night sleuthing, to possibly bust my know-it-all teenager “borrowing” the car… I don’t need any parenting advice, or ideas on how to keep track of the car’s usage in the future. Just looking for an answer to the unusually specific question at the end. Read on, if so inclined.

So, I was heading out for work the other morning at 5am and I heard my wife’s 14.5 Camry SE performing it’s mysterious fuel evaporation leakage test in the garage. Im very familiar with the sound it makes, and I’ve heard it dozens of times over the years. It performs this check like clockwork, approximately 5 hours after the engine is turned off when the car is parked. It lasts a little less than ten minutes, and goes quiet again.
Anyway, I heard it at 5 am the other morning… meaning, the car had to have been parked around midnight the night before. Except, my wife and I parked it around 5pm the previous day, and went to sleep together at 9 o’clock as we’ve done for years.
The kicker is… our teenager who lives in the basement.
It’s well within the scope of reason that he took the car on an unsanctioned joyride late that Friday night… when asked about this, he (very convincingly) denied using the car, at any point that night and actually went so far as to debunk my theory by claiming he has heard the sound of the fuel evaporation leakage test when the car has been parked, unused for 12 hours…
As far as I’ve ever known, the car runs this self diagnostic once, about 5 hrs after it’s turned off, and does not repeat the diagnostic until after the next time it’s been driven.

Can anyone confirm (with any degree of certainty) that the fuel evaporation leakage test is performed once per rest period or possibly multiple times?

Thanks folks!

Typically, a car performs the Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) test once during a specified drive cycle, not repeatedly after every rest period. This system checks for fuel vapor leaks. However, in some cases, a car might run the test at the next startup if it hasn't been completed during the previous drive cycle. It's uncommon for the test to occur multiple times within a few hours. If your 14.5 Camry SE is consistently conducting the test after only a few hours of rest, it might indicate an issue with the EVAP system, and consulting the dealership or a mechanic for a diagnostic check would be advisable.
