Brakes/ABS
 

The car doesn't respond as it should when trying to stop and front wheels vibrate when on snow/ice.
Disabled the ABS (disconneting a wire) and now the brakes seem to work normally.
Besides avoiding sudden stops, is there something I should be watching for?

Cars have operated for years without ABS brakes just fine. If the ABS is disconnected the brakes will still operate normally. The system being off the brakes can now be locked up. Sudden stops are OK, just remember the brakes will now lock up increasing the cars stopping distance.

It's always a good idea to leave extra room between you and the car in front ABS or not.

Might try cleaning any road debris off the front ABS wheel sensors.

If interested, the ABS system has a self-diagnostic feature that can be accessed to output any trouble codes stored if something is amiss enough to set them.

I can't argue against your logic (never could).
Will make an appointment with my mechanic.
But glad to hear you confirming it's not an absolute must.
Between the old, good non-ABS and a new, bad-ABS, I much prefer the first.
