The front end of my car the wheel studs I believe are part of the actual rotor I could be wrong..

However my problem is with the rear....Everytime I take it somewhere to get the tires balanced or rotated I end up with cross threaded studs and lugs...

My question is how do I remove the studs off the rear? I have a drum setup on the rear end. I see a rubber plug thats removable however Im unsure as of to how to remove the rear drum assembly. As well as change the studs? Any directions to this would be helpful

The rubber plug is an inspection hole plus allows access to the automatic brake shoe adjuster.

It is possible the shoes have worn into the drum surface making removing the drum impossible. In this case the plug is removed and drum rotated until the hole allows access to the automatic adjustment mechanism behind it. A bent wire can be inserted through the hole to pull away the adjuster lever from the adjuster screw (looks like a star wheel). Then using a screwdriver the screw is rotated to back the shoes away from the drum.

Caution: Rotating the screw in one direction will move the shoes away from the drum. Rotating in the other will move the shoes toward the drum. If in rotating the screw the shoes starts to bind on the drum rotate the screw in the opposite direction.

Once done the drum may still be bound up on the axle hub. You may need to hit the hub with a hammer. Place a block of wood or something like this between the hammer head and drum when pounding to spread the impact force and not damage the drum.

Once the drum is off you will have access to the axle hub. The studs are pressed into the hub from behind and will need to be pressed or driven out.

Some people use a hammer but best to use a tool designed for this that grips the axle and uses a screw to push the stud out.

Install the new stud from behind then place washers on the stud and use the nut to pull the stud into place.

Auto parts stores or the dealer should stock the stud. You will need to know the length, diameter and thread. You can get the diameter and thread from the nut.

The internet has lots of posts on removing stuck brake drums and replacing studs.

Make sure to also use new nuts.
